Sun instead of weapons

SolarWorld Industries GmbH is supplying 16,500 quality modules for the construction of a solar farm at a former military site near Fürstenwalde. The total installed capacity is 7.5 MWp and was planned and implemented by Sunovis GmbH from Singen. The site, east of Berlin, has been used by the military for a hundred years. Most recently, the Red Army stored military material at the site. Instead, in the future, clean electricity will be produced here from solar energy.

“The previous military use of the site and the clean-up of the land for civilian use was a particular challenge,” says project developer Martina Schlott of Sunovis GmbH. The explosive ordnance disposal service first examined the conversion area and removed explosive ordnance, including buried handguns. The site was prepared beginning in April 2017, and over the past nine weeks, the park was built. The entire solar farm will be connected to the grid in early November, and parts of the plant have already been erected and put into operation.

“The best conceivable conversion,” says Dr.-Ing. E.h. Frank Asbeck, CEO of SolarWorld Industries of the project. “The sun is per se the most friendly of all energy sources. We are especially pleased that here, we can also directly contribute to the transformation of a military area to the production of clean energy.”
