A reliable power supply with 100% renewable energy
Stable grids even with 20% solar power: As a consortium partner, SolarWorld has supported the three-year project "Combined Power Plant 2" since 2010. The project results were finally presented to the public on October 30th. From SolarWorld's perspective, the results are very positive: With 100% renewable energy, from which 20% is solar power, the "Combined Power Plant 2" makes clear that the grid remains stable, and that "system services" can be provided such as maintaining voltage and restarting the grid in the event of a power failure. The project also demonstrates that the "blackout" concerns expressed by the fossil energy companies due to too much renewable energy are pure propaganda. Khayelitsha in South Africa, Sun TV: Football and Education for South Africa
In the run-up to the 2010 FIFA Football World Cup SolarWorld AG will equip the “Football for Hope Centre” established by FIFA in the community of Khayelitsha with a Sun TV Station. This centre is one of 20 “Football for Hope Centres” whose creation follows FIFA’s vision of promoting health and education together with football in South Africa.
SolarWorld’s objective is to give both socially and economically disadvantaged communities access to the biggest sports event to date in their home country, the 2010 FIFA Football World Cup. By establishing a 12-component module group that will supply the Sun TV Station with a peak power output of 2.64 Kilowatt and by providing a television set including a satellite link SolarWorld will enable the South African viewers to enjoy unimpaired viewing of the games played by their own team and by the remaining World Cup participants.
Solar power plant for the Vatican
In 2008, SolarWorld AG donated a solar power system for the roof of the Aula Paolo VI papal auditorium. The roughly 2,000 modules generate approximately 315,500kWh per year and reduce CO2 emissions by around 315 metric tons. The overall concept doesn't just take into account energy aspects but also the highly complex integration of the photovoltaic system into the auditorium building. The SolarWorld engineers replaced the existing cement strips on the south side of the curved roof with special modules made in a special production process. The solar modules optimally adjust to the fan shape of the architecturally sophisticated building tapering from south to north. The special wave structure and the related aesthetics of the roof at the foot of St. Peter’s Cathedral have thus been preserved. The inverters for the system were provided by the German manufacturer, SMA. SolarWorld AG was supported in the implementation of the Vatican project by its long-standing distribution partner in Italy, Tecnospot Srl.
Together with the Naturschutzverband Deutsche Umwelthilfe e.V. we support the initiative SolarLokal, a national image campaign for solar power in districts, cities and communities. SolarLokal is supported by the three central organizations of local government – the Deutscher Landkreistag (German rural district association), Deutscher Städtetag (association of German cities) and the Deutscher Städte- und Gemeindebund (German alliance of cities and communities).

Support for the „Rain Forest“ exhibition
One of the largest exhibitions worldwide on the topic of the “Rain Forest” that is to take place in the renowned natural history Museum Alexander Koenig in Bonn in 2008 will be supported by SolarWorld AG. According to estimates some 70 per cent of all animal and plant species live in rain forests. Yet, this breathtaking variety of species is threatened by massive woodland clearance. In addition, the rain forest is an essential storage facility for climate gases in the sense that carbon dioxide is processed into organic matter. Thus, the increased cutting down of these forests will lead to a massive exacerbation of the climate change. What is more, the rain forests also contain a large number of resources that we will depend on in the long term, like for example for drugs.
