SolarWorld Secures Sustainable Solar-Grade Silicon Supplies Through In-House Production, Recycling and Long-Term Contracts with Renowned Manufacturers

Expanding in-house production of Sunsil solar-grade silicon in the framework of the joint venture operated in Rheinfelden with Evonik Degussa GmbH and the group’s comprehensive internal recycling activities, the SolarWorld Group has secured its global solar raw material base through long-term contracts with renowned manufacturers. With this three-pillar strategy SolarWorld pursues a secure and consistent procurement strategy for its raw materials. To this end, Deutsche Solar AG, a wholly owned subsidiary of SolarWorld AG, has concluded a further contract with the Korean silicon producer DC Chemical Co. Ltd. (DCC) for the delivery of solar-grade silicon valued at 580 million US dollars by 2016. With this new silicon contract SolarWorld is additionally securing the utilization peaks of its wafer production at the Freiberg/Saxony and Hillsboro/Oregon locations. 'We appreciate the partnership with DCC. The company is renowned for top quality and we are looking forward to the long-term cooperation', says the CEO of Deutsche Solar AG, Prof. Dr. Peter Woditsch. In parallel to the contracts to secure raw material supplies, additional long-term contracts for sales of solar wafers worth more than 350 million US dollars in total were concluded with customers in Germany and China. The order book, which extends until 2018, has thus exceeded a volume of 9 billion US dollars. 'We are aiming to increase our order book to ten billion US dollars by the end of 2008', comments the CEO of SolarWorld AG, Dipl.-Ing. Frank H. Asbeck, on the Group’s further outlook.
