SolarWorld AG Relies on Germany as Production Location

Breaking Ground for Production Expansion to 1 Gigawatt in Freiberg

Also in the face of progressing globalization in the solar industry SolarWorld AG is coming out fairly and squarely in favor of Germany as a production location as far as the expansion of its own production is concerned. By breaking ground for the new Industrial Estate East in Freiberg/Saxony in the presence of Wolfgang Tiefensee, the German Minister of Transport, the group will be initiating one of the biggest expansion projects in its history. On a 200,000 square meters area at the edge of the University Town of Freiberg a modern wafer production plant is being created with which the wafer production capacity will be increased by 500 Megawatt (MW) up to one Gigawatt (1,000 Megawatt) until end of 2010. Total investments will amount to 350 million EUR. More than 500 new jobs will be created. The first stage of expansion will provide for the increase of the production potential by 250 MW to 750 MW by the end of 2009. 'Reliable political framework conditions, qualified employees and a modern infrastructural environment – all these characterize Germany as a production location', says Dipl.-Ing. Frank H. Asbeck, Chairman and CEO of SolarWorld AG. 'For our investments into the solar future these are ideal conditions.' Topping-out ceremony for technical school In addition to the breaking ground ceremony for the new production area in Freiberg the group also celebrates the topping-out ceremony for a technical school at the traditional location. Thus, SolarWorld AG continues consistently its expansion and quality policy. The new industrial building is being created in the immediate vicinity of the future Research & Development Center. The technical school will enable further technological development in the industrial production. Additionally, it will boost future expansion plans.
